Chapter 10

The next month was quiet with a great deal of work being accomplished. Everything seemed to fall into place all at once. The house roof was torn off and replaced. Seemed the old house had good bones, as the foreman called it.

The plumber was called in after Ty turned the faucet on in the kitchen to get a drink of water, and the faucet, a pipe, and half the wall exploded. After racing into the house, just knowing his baby was dead, Saber came upon Ty lying in the middle of the kitchen floor, laughing, with water, plaster, and heaven knew what else lying everywhere. He looked at Saber and burst out laughing again, with Saber joining in this time. His baby really was something special.

Saber still hadn’t gotten the hang of the possessed tractor from hell, or PTH as he called it, but it was getting better as the crop rows were getting straighter. Sampson’s pastern was looking much better, as the huge swelling had gone down a great deal, and he wasn’t limping quite so badly anymore. Crusty said, with some good care, he’d be well enough to ride soon. Saber was glad, as Sampson really was a nice-looking horse. Ty had taken to Sampson and was bathing, brushing, and generally fussing over the large steed. It was something to see, as the horse stood stoically while Ty sat on the top rail of a fence, washing his back. He also made sure his stall was kept as clean as possible so he’d heal faster. Ty always seem to have an apple or a carrot for the big guy, and damned if that horse never once stepped on him. Saber starting bribing him, too.

Saber tried to make Crusty feel important, so he asked the man’s advice when it came time to pick out the six horses they would need for the ranch. Saber never once mentioned that he could ride before he could walk.

Jake decided on a chestnut gelding, and his brother, Bo, chose a sorrel mare. Saber tried to get Ty to pick one out, but the man stated he was waiting for Sampson, so Saber picked out a Percheron stallion for himself. He would never admit it if called on it, but Saber didn’t want to ride a horse shorter than his mate’s.

Saber watched Ty early one afternoon as once again, the young man got into an old pair of blue coveralls. He placed a few biscuits in his pocket, grabbed a rake and a stiff brush, and then he walked out toward the pasture where Slayer resided. Saber had asked Crusty if Ty was safe doing that, but the old man just laughed, telling Saber he had to see it for himself. So Saber watched as Ty walked up to the fence, talking softly to Slayer as the huge bull actually stood by the fence waiting on him. Ty climbed the fence and slowly went over it. He gave the bull a biscuit then started raking his back, scratching him, talking to him the entire time.
